Living in a dorm or shared apartment can be tricky when you have food allergies. Even a small amount of an allergen left on a counter, pan, or table can cause a reaction, so cleaning properly is key to staying safe. I’ve learned that a few simple habits make a huge difference.
Always start by wiping down surfaces before and after using them…. especially shared kitchen counters and tables. Regular soap and water work better than sanitizer wipes for removing allergens. Use your own sponge or dishcloth and avoid sharing utensils, cutting boards, or pans unless they’ve been washed thoroughly. In my dorm, we have a shared kitchen area. I have my own dishes that I bring down to use. And, when I use the oven to heat something, I use foil on the racks or I use these aluminum foil pans.
When using shared appliances like microwaves or toasters, cover your food with a clean plate or paper towel to reduce the risk of contact with crumbs or spills. And don’t forget to wash your hands before eating or preparing food—it’s one of the simplest but most effective steps.
Keeping shared spaces clean isn’t just about being neat—it’s about protecting your health and helping everyone share the space safely.
