My Favorite Things as a College Athlete with Food Allergies
College life is busy, unpredictable, and exciting all at once. As a student-athlete with multiple food allergies, my days are filled with practices, workouts, classes, and careful planning around meals. Over time, I’ve discovered a few favorite easy food/snack items that help me stay fueled and full while balancing it all. These “must-haves” make my college athlete life easier—and a lot more enjoyable.
1. Fitness & Recovery Essentials
Training pushes my body to its limits, so recovery is just as important as practice. These pre- and post workout snacks help fuel my body and help it recover faster. These Organic Vegan Protein Shakes are delicious and just what I need after a hard practice. If I have time and oat milk on hand, I use this Organic Protein Powder with this vortex shaker. Before practice, I fuel with some simple carbs. I keep these rice cake snacks on hand in my dorm room and grab a bag as I am walking to practice. These 88 Acres allergy friendly granola bars are delicious, filing and help me fuel before practice…. the lemon blueberry flavor is my favorite!
2. Dorm Room Comforts
After long days, my dorm is my place to recharge. I always keep a few essentials in my room that make life easier and safer. One of my favorites is popcorn. This silicon microwave popcorn maker is great for a quick and nutritious study snack. I also stock up on these individual bags of Skinny Pop Popcorn and if I want something sweet, I throw in a handful of these delicious Dairy-Free chocolate chips by Nestle
3. Swim Meet Day Must-Haves
As a college swimmer, meet days require focus and preparation. Whether it is a home meet or an away meet, I spend time preparing to make sure I have everything I need. ** No matter where I go, I always make sure I have my allergy medicine with me in case of an allergic reaction. In addition to carrying an epinephrine device, I also carry a dose of liquid Benadryl in one of these convenient plastic dropper bottles and my rescue asthma inhaler. In addition to my asthma/allergy meds and swim gear, I always make sure I have food and snacks. For a quick post-meet drink, my go-to is a Dairy Free chocolate plant-based drink.
Why These Favorites Matter
Being a college athlete with food allergies means planning ahead and finding balance between training, classes, and staying safe. These favorites have made a difference in helping me feel prepared, less stressed, and ready to give my best every day. Hopefully, some of my go-to items can make your college journey (athletic or not) a little smoother too!
